Sanctuary: A Womens Refuge in IndiaSocial Science, York University, 4700 Keele Street, Toronto, Ontario M3J 1P3 Canadajgibbons{at}yorku.ca This research addresses delineations of gender roles, agency, and change in a modern urban womens residence in north India. It explores the social relations of residents in a womens hostel where the shaping of special community creates empowermenf through self-reflection, interaction, and negotiation, yet where also reside tensions, paradoxes, and constraints, in the merging and interplay of traditional values and those of modernity.
